The first person in the UK to be prosecuted for selling Android boxes

A man will be the first person in the UK to be prosecuted for selling Android boxes which are used by people across the country to live stream TV.

People are monitoring the court action to see if that will lead to further prosecutions and a tightening up of the law.

So does the court action affect you?

What is an android box?

An android box, also known as a Kodi box, is a viewing box which allows you to access the internet to get apps, such as Netflix and Youtube, but also to access streams from the web for free.

The box connects to your television and acts as a ‘big USB stick’.

What can I watch?

You can download legal streaming apps such as Netflix and Amazon to watch, but the box can also come with add-ons that can access streaming of such things as 3pm Premier League football shown in other countries – which is illegal.

The biggest draw for people is the ability to bypass geographical blocks, such as Netlfix US, to access content only available in other countries.

Is it legal?

There are major questions over the legality of the box and what people can watch.

What is illegal is the hosting and viewing of copyrighted content, such as films, Premier League football and television series.

Boxes which also come with streaming services without subscriptions are also illegal.
