Is Kodi illegal? First man arrested over box for watching Premier League football games for free

If you watch Premier League football without paying for it, there’s a good chance you have used Kodi.

But many fans have questions about the devices, including whether or not they are legal.

The app has become popular for those who wish to watch copyrighted material, also including movies and box sets, for free.

And later this month, a trader on Teesside will appear in court after becoming the first person to be prosecuted for selling Android boxes.

It could prove to be a landmark case, the Birmingham Mail reports.

Is it legal?

There are many streaming apps on the market but Kodi is the best known at the moment. It’s a media player that can be downloaded and used on devices to organise media. This is legal.

What’s illegal then?

There are kits on the market, including those by names like Apple and Amazon, that allow consumers to stream internet content on their TV.

People are then buying kits from independent traders, from sites like eBay, that have been pre-loaded with Kodi with add-ons and plug-ins.

Will you be prosecuted?

Authorities say it is illegal to modify kits to receive this material.

There have been similar raids the one that led to the arrest of the man in Teeside.

If he is found guilty, it would likely spark a wave of prosecutions and effectively outlaw the kit.

If not, further law cases would be more unlikely and that would make the boxes effectively legal.
